CII to Push for Industrial Corridors and Development of Tier II
Chennai, April 6, 2018: "To accelerate the growth of Southern States, CII - Southern Region will work with State Governments for the development of Industrial Corridors, Tier II Cities and also work towards nation building. CII would work closely with State Governments and all other relevant stakeholders concerned on Mission Mode in creating a robust and conducive industrial ecosystem in South India, said Mr R Dinesh the newly elected Chairman of CII Southern Region.
Outlining CII-SR’s priorities for 2018-19 to Media, Mr Dinesh said that South India, with its pulsating industrial ecosystem aided by business-friendly policies of the Southern State Governments, has always had an upper hand, when it comes to the contribution to the national GDP. In order to keep up the growth momentum, CII will work with the State Governments on specific areas such as industrial corridors, development of tier II cities besides focus on key policy enablers to support growth of MSMEs in the region.
Mr Dinesh said that CII-SR has taken up the theme of “Vibrant South – Competitive, Inclusive & Responsible” for the Southern Region for 2018-19. Acting on the theme, CII will focus on key enablers such as job creation, skill development and training, affirmative action, women parity, new models of development, sustainability, corporate social responsibility, governance and transparency for accelerating South India's growth and development.
He said that as part of its membership engagement initiatives, CII will focus on policy regime transitions, sector specific policies, SMEs Cluster programmes, incentives for growth, IT penetration, Technology & IP and global engagement facilitation.
On Competitiveness, Mr Dinesh said that CII would focus on key enablers such as Manufacturing with special focus on MSMEs; promotion of Startups and Entrepreneurs; Education & Skills with thrust on rural job creation; fast tracking of infrastructure projects; International business linkages for the Indian industry besides creating a conducive environment for a thriving industrial relations.
The Inclusive agenda of CII Southern Region would focus on some of the key areas like sustainability, environment, education, skill development, job training and women empowerment. CII has been advocating governance, transparency and accountability as a mantra for achieving sustainable growth.
On Responsible Governance, CII is working with State Governments in promoting industrial development supported by a conducive policy environment. CII is also working with the respective State Governments in advocating fiscal prudence besides Single Window Clearance for industrial approvals.
Over 65% of CII members are SMEs. CII, through its Technology Development Centres in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh is providing technology support and IP facilitation for SMEs to compete globally. Besides this, CII has also embarked upon Cluster program for MSMEs.
Under the CII-SR Water Alliance, CII is working with State Governments and industry in rejuvenation of lakes in Southern States. This initiative has been rolled out in Tamil Nadu under phase I of the program.
Through the CSR Gateway, over 1000 stakeholders ranging from corporates, NGOs and other CSR related entities have been connected in the online portal exploring opportunities on CSR projects.
With an aim to support small farmers in Southern States, CII has launched crop specific initiatives. A Millet Task Force has also been formed to promote Millet cultivation and promotion in Southern States.
Mr Dinesh outlined several new initiatives for the current year including Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Internet of Things (IoT) program for MSMEs; Creation of Geographical Indicators (GI) for specific products; City Connect initiatives; Sustainable Transportation & Urban Mobility Solutions; Port Led Economic Development in Southern; Digital Readiness Survey of CII Members in Southern Region through Manufacturing & Digital Excellence (MADE) Initiative; promotion of Inland Waterways among others.
