Lucia Movie Review
Director: Pawan Kumar
Cast: Neenasam Satish, Shruthi Hariharan, Hardhika Shetty, Achyuth Kumar
Director Pawan Kumar’s new Kannada film Lucia is a mystery movie with a surprise twist in the end. In other words, it’s not your average Sandalwood potboiler. So much so that Kumar raised money for it through crowdfunding knowing that film financiers would hesitate to bankroll it. The movie starts with the protagonist (Neenasam Satish) leading a stress-free life as an usher in his close friend's movie theatre, with the only problem in life being insomnia.
During one of such sleepless nights he comes across a few guys who introduce him to "Lucia" which would then change his life totally. He then starts dreaming that he is a pretty famous movie star who wants to lead a normal life. What follows next is two stories that run in parallel throughout the movie. Though he maintains a rugged look with a stubble as an usher, he has a surprisingly extremely smart look as a movie star.
While he falls in love with a girl who visits the theatre to watch a movie with her friends, the same girl enters his dreams as an item dancer who starts flirting with him. Despite the fact that the film is a restless ride where the lines between dreams and reality are blurred to delirious effect, Lucia’s end is indeed unexpected.
The film is let down by low levels of suspense and storytelling. The songs are something that could capture the audience. Neenasam Sateesh and Shruthi Hariharan have showcased their potential in acting but in a movie that crumples under the weight of its ambitions.
