Political leaders seek probe into custodial death of differently-abled man

Several political parties in Tamil Nadu have demanded a thorough investigation into the custodial death of Sabari Varman, a 34-year-old differently-abled man, while urging Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to address the issue publicly.

DMK deputy general secretary Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, who met the victim’s family, criticised the government’s response and claimed that no senior officials or ministers had visited the family. She also alleged that legal action was initiated only after sustained pressure from relatives and opposition parties.

Former AIADMK minister D. Jayakumar accused the police of using excessive force against Varman over a minor tobacco-related offence. He also questioned the government’s handling of other alleged law-and-order incidents and criticised what he described as a lack of political leadership.

PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss described the death as deeply disturbing and called for the case to be transferred to the CBI. Referring to multiple custodial deaths reported in recent months, he sought the formation of a high-level inquiry commission. He also requested financial assistance of ₹50 lakh and a government job for the victim’s wife.
