Five from Chennai family killed in highway crash near Madurai

Police identified the deceased as 34-year-old K. Sriram, who was driving the vehicle, his brother Balaji, his mother Rajamery, his wife Ranchana and their 18-month-old daughter Kiruthiga.

Sriram’s father, V. Kanagaraj (55), survived the accident with injuries. Two motorcyclists, R. Rathinam (40) and C. Murugan (55) from Sivaganga, along with another motorist, J. Prakash (50) of Madurai, were also injured.

All those hurt were admitted to the Government Hospital in Melur for treatment. Preliminary investigations suggest that the car, travelling from Chennai towards Madurai, was being driven at high speed when the driver reportedly lost control. The vehicle first struck a motorcycle, hit the median, overturned several times and finally crashed into the wall of a bridge.

Madurai District Collector Nishanth Krishna inspected the accident site and later visited the injured victims at the hospital. The Melur police have launched an investigation into the incident.
