Modi and Trump discuss trade, defence and critical technology ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have discussed a range of issues covering bilateral relations, including trade, defence, energy and critical technologies.

The two leaders spoke by telephone on Wednesday evening and also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including efforts aimed at promoting global peace and security.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi and Trump reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. They also agreed to remain closely engaged to expand cooperation between the two countries.

The conversation comes as India and the US continue discussions on a proposed bilateral trade agreement.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is in the United States from September 29 to October 5 for negotiations related to the proposed pact and a possible interim arrangement.

New Delhi has said the discussions are aimed at achieving a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement between the two countries.
