SRM Global Hospitals Emphasis the Importance of Timely Medical Intervention and Rehabilitation in Stroke Recovery

SRM Global Hospitals highlights the critical role of timely medical intervention and comprehensive rehabilitation in improving recovery outcomes for stroke patients. Timely medical care can significantly influence recovery, minimise long-term disabilities, and improve patients' quality of life.

A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when brain cells begin to die due to an inadequate supply of oxygen. It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted. It affects an individual’s movement, speech, vision, memory, and ability to perform day-to-day activities. Since brain tissue begins to die within minutes, stroke management is extremely time-sensitive.

According to the World Stroke Organization, one in four people is at risk of stroke in their lifetime, and over 12 million people experience a stroke each year globally. It is one of the major causes of death and long-term disability. Healthcare professionals have been raising awareness about stroke prevention, early recognition of its symptoms, and the importance of timely medical intervention.

Sudden facial drooping, weakness in the arms, speech difficulties, vision loss and loss of balance are some of the common warning signs of a stroke. The public is encouraged to remember the BE FAST approach, Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech and Time, to identify potential symptoms and ensure that medical attention is not delayed.

Emphasising the importance of early diagnosis and comprehensive post-stroke care, Dr Alex J, Neurologist at SRM Global Hospitals, said "timely assessment helps doctors determine the type of stroke and identify appropriate treatment options. At our Kattankulathur facility, emergency stroke services include round-the-clock assessment, CT and MRI diagnostics, and specialist neurological care. Eligible patients may receive intravenous thrombolysis to dissolve blood clots or mechanical thrombectomy to remove clots from blocked brain arteries. Carotid artery stenting may also be considered when indicated.”

While immediate medical intervention is crucial, stroke recovery extends beyond emergency treatment and requires a comprehensive rehabilitation approach. Depending on individual needs, rehabilitation may include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and swallowing therapy, and cognitive rehabilitation.

"Our rehabilitation centre provides support tailored to individual patients, with the aim of improving functional abilities and helping them regain greater independence. Recovery varies from patient to patient, making personalised rehabilitation an important part of the recovery journey," Dr Alex added.

Preventive measures also play an important role in reducing the risk of stroke. These include managing blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol levels, avoiding tobacco consumption, exercising regularly and adhering to prescribed medication. Recognising early warning signs and seeking emergency medical care without delay remain essential.

Every minute matters when it comes to stroke. Awareness of the symptoms, timely medical intervention and continued rehabilitation can make a significant difference in a patient's recovery journey.
