Dr V Mohan Honoured with Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award  by Government of Tamil Nadu

Dr V Mohan, Chairman of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) has been conferred the prestigious Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award 2026 by the Government of Tamil Nadu recognising his outstanding contributions to scientific advancement, healthcare, diabetes research and public health.

On behalf of Dr V. Mohan, the award was received by his daughter, Dr R. M. Anjana, Managing Director of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and President of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation. The award was presented by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, in the presence of distinguished dignitaries.

The Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award, instituted by the Government of Tamil Nadu in honour of former President of India and eminent scientist Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of science, humanities and the welfare of students. The award is presented during the Independence Day celebrations of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Dr V Mohan is the first medical doctor to receive the Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award, marking a significant milestone in the history of this prestigious state honour.

For more than five decades, Dr V Mohan has dedicated his career to advancing diabetes care, research and education in India and globally. His work has contributed significantly to understanding diabetes in Indian populations, its complications, genetics, nutrition and prevention, while also strengthening diabetes research and healthcare delivery.

Dr V Mohan has more than 1,900 scientific publications which have attracted over 257,000 citations with a h-index of 176 and an i10-index of 1,268. His extensive research has helped place Indian diabetes research on the global scientific map.

Dr V Mohan has also been consistently recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists in rankings based on Stanford University, Elsevier and SciTech Strategies and has been recognised as one of India's leading medical scientists.

Dr V Mohan has received numerous national and international honours, including the Padma Shri from Government of India, the Dr B.C. Roy National Award from the Medical Council of India and several recognitions for his contributions to diabetes research, education and patient care.

He has been conferred the Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service and the Kelly West Award for Epidemiology by the American Diabetes Association. In 2025, he was conferred the Diabetes Global Impact Prize by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) recognising his longstanding global contribution to diabetes care, research, education and policy.

 

The Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award adds another significant milestone to Dr. Mohan’s career dedicated to scientific excellence, medical innovation and improving the lives of people living with diabetes.
