CM Vijay approves 5 daily shows for new Tamil films’ first week
Tamil Nadu CM C Joseph Vijay issued an order amending the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, to permit all theatres to run five shows a day for the first seven days of any new Tamil film’s release.
This entitlement also applies on weekends, public holidays, and local festival days, and crucially removes the requirement for theatre owners to seek separate permissions from district collectors or the Chennai police commissioner.
The decision follows a May 16 meeting with film industry representatives and marks a permanent policy shift from the earlier four-show limit plus occasional special permissions.
Industry analysts highlight that one extra daily show can generate significant additional revenue, with mid-sized films potentially earning over Rs 1.4 crore in their first week from the change alone.
The first seven days are critical for recouping investments and influencing satellite, OTT, and music rights valuations.
By guaranteeing five shows without bureaucratic delays, the government has given producers a structural advantage in maximising opening week collections
