Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia occurs when the prostate gland which surrounds the urethra enlarges, leading to frequent urination during the day and night, slow urine stream, incomplete emptying of the bladder, sudden urgency to urinate, blood in the urine, complete blockage of urine flow and in advanced stages complications such as recurrent urinary tract infections. When medication, the primary approach to treat BPH fails, surgical procedures such as Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) or Open/Robotic Prostatectomy are often recommended. While these surgeries carry negligible side effects, they require general anaesthesia or spinal anaesthesia, making them unsuitable for elderly patients or those with underlying health conditions.
The UroLift procedure operates by compressing the prostate tissue that obstructs the urethra, resulting in improved urine flow. During the procedure, small permanent MRI compatible implants are strategically placed in the urinary pathway, which is performed under mild sedation or local anaesthesia, ensuring the safety of even elderly patients.
