Tiruvarur: A trial run of the newly-made, 36-foot 'Azhi Ther' (Temple Car) of the famous Sri Thiagarajaswamy temple has been held here, with thousands of devotees pulling it and offering worship.

Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister R Kamaraj yesterday inaugurated the trial run of the car, constructed at a cost of Rs 2.16 crore to replace the existing one made in 1930.

The car has five 'asans' (seats), including Simha Asan (Lion throne). The five tier car is 36 feet tall, a government press release said. The older car was 92 feet tall and weighed about 350 tonnes with five tiers.
