Tamilnadu moves SC against Kovan's bail
Chennai: The Tamilnadu government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court today, seeking cancellation of bail for singer Kovan arrested on sedition charges.
Kovan, a folk singer belonging to the Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam, was arrested in Trichi on 30 October on sedition charges for singing songs that were defamatory against Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and 'disturbing' public peace.
But, granting bail to Kovan on Monday, Principal Sessions judge N Audinathan observed during the hearing that the case was not one of defamation.
The judge directed Kovan to appear before the investigation officer as and when required and also to furnish a personal bond of Rs 5,000 with two sureties of like sum. Seeking the cancellation of the bail, the Tamilnadu goverment today filed a special petition in the Supreme Court requesting to quash the bail.
