Supreme Court says 'no' to Jallikattu
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the operation of a government notification that allowed Jallikattu or Pongal bull sports in Tamil Nadu.
The Supreme Court also issued notice to the Centre and Tamil Nadu government on petitions filed by various bodies against the lifting of the ban.
The Centre's notification lifting the ban on the bull taming sport of Jallikattu, celebrated during the festival of Pongal, was challenged in the Supreme Court on Monday.
The pleas were filed by Animal Welfare Board of India, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India and a Bangalore-based NGO.
The four-year-old ban on holding of Jallikattu was lifted on January 8 by the Modi government in poll-bound Tamil Nadu with certain restrictions.
