Chennai: Government General Hospital opened a special fever help desk at its premises opposite Central Railway station. The new facility was inaugurated by State Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan, would function from 8 a.m to 3 p.m everyday till the fevers caused by monsoon show a downward trend, said Dean of Government General Hospital Dr R Vimala.

People with fever can get themselves checked and procure medicines here. This will be a one-stop shop for treating fevers as treatment and medicines can be obtained here, she said. If the patient's condition is found to be serious and requiring more than basic treatment doctors at the help desk would suggest admission in the hospital.

Meanwhile, personnel attached to the GH, said they have a regular fever ward in the hospital which is a 15-bed unit, however keeping in view the chances of fever cases increasing due to the recent rains they have been running an exclusive fever wards for male and female patients for the past one month.

While the male fever patient ward has 25 beds, about 20 beds have been provided in the female ward. Here all the beds have been provided with mosquito nets and a team of six doctors in both the units are working to ensure treatment.

The doctors are under the supervision of Director of Internal Medicine at Government General Hospital Dr Srinivasa Galu said, "We have put up educative posters in these wards where one can learn simple preventive steps for stopping the spread of ailments."

'We are even providing traditional preparations like Nilavembu kashayam and papaya leaf extract to those with fever with help of Directorate of Indian Medicine."
