Residents want electric lines checking in Velachery
Chennai: A day after a couple was killed when an electric line snapped and fell on them, residents urge authorities to get the wires across the neighbourhood checked and repaired.
A case has been registered and city police sources say that the bodies of Karunanidhi and Sudha of Ashtalakshmi Nagar have been sent for post mortem. Based on the results of which, they can proceed with the case and take necessary action. The police source also maintains that the electric lines are being checked.
It may be noted that last evening, protesters had gathered on 100 Feet Road here, condemning the death of Karunanidhi and Sudha who were riding on a motorcycle with their daughters, aged 4 and 5, when an overhead power supply wire snapped and fell on them. While the daughters had a miraculous escape, the couple died.
One of the protestors said that danger continues to loom over the area, and that last week, a wire had snapped in a similar fashion killing a dog. Following this, the Electricity Board had fixed it temporarily.
"There are many wires which may endanger lives. The heavy winds and branches that fall on them might have caused this problem," he said. This morning Councillors and Electricity board members visited the spot.
