R.K. Nagar in city to get new govt college
Chennai: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced a new arts and science college in R K Nagar constituency in the city, from where she was elected to the Assembly. It will be set up at a cost of Rs 8.48 crore.
Making a statement under Rule 110 of the Assembly, she said the government led by her has been implementing various measures for the development of education. In the last 4.5 years, 53 new colleges including four government engineering colleges were started and 959 new courses were introduced.
She said as a result of the measures, the gross enrolment rate of Tamilnadu has increased from 18 to 42.8 per cent, and the State has emerged top in the country.
Recalling that she announced starting of five new polytechnic colleges and five university constituent colleges in the Assembly on 25 September, the Chief Minister said she has received requests from various quarters that government arts and science colleges should be started in districts where such facilities are not there.
"I am happy to announce that new arts and science colleges will be started at Veerapandi in Theni district, Sathyamangalam in Erode district and Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district at a cost of Rs 25.44 crore (Rs 8.48 crore each)," she said. The Chief Minister said these initiatives will create a situation that all districts in Tamilnadu have government arts and science colleges.
