HC moved for permission to celebrate Tipu's birth anniversary
Chennai: A petition has been filed in the Madras High Court challenging refusal of police permission to celebrate the birth anniversary of 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan on November 20 by an outfit in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu.
When the petition by Thamilaga Makkal Jananayaka Katchi, a social organisation based in Gudiyatham town in Vellore district, came up for hearing, Justice MM Sundresh on Tuesday ordered notice to the jurisdictional police. The Judge directed the Gudiyatham Police to file its counter and adjourned the matter to November 20.
The petitioner organisation submitted that police had denied permission to it for celebrating Tipu Sultan's birth anniversary stating that law and order problem would arise. Stating that Tipu Sultan was a freedom fighter who fought against the British, it said that some communal organisations are speaking ill of him just because he was a Muslim.
