Engineer groom tried to flee the city, held by Police
CHENNAI: Police on Wednesday arrested a civil engineer employed in Singapore as he tried to flee the city boarding a flight from Chennai airport after abandoning his marriage scheduled on September 3 and 4 in Purasawalkam.
The groom's father Dasthagir Kumar Rao told the bride's family on August 28 they didn't want to pursue the marriage without giving any proper explanation. Bride's father Narayana Rao, 58, tried to approach the groom's family but he could not.
Bride's father Narayana Rao filed a complaint with the all-woman police at the Madipakkam police station. Following a tip, police nabbed Dilip Kumar as he was about to board a flight for Singapore.
Police registered a case under IPC Sections 506 (II) (criminal intimidation) and 417 (cheating). A court remanded Dilip Kumar in judicial custody.
The bride's sister Nisha Devi Sivakumar said, "The groom and his family has spoiled my sister's life. We have so far spent Rs12 lakh for the marriage arrangements. The groom's family after suspending the marriage demanded us to pay Rs5 lakh as dowry to pursue the marriage proposal."
The bride has studied B.Tech in chemical engineering and employed in a private firm. As per the advice of the groom, she resigned her job. As per the complaint of Narayana Rao, police have registered case against groom and all his family members. However, the groom Dilip Kumar was alone arrested, while others remained missing.
