Chennai Central station to get facility for lactating moms
CHENNAI: Starting October 2, women passengers arriving at Chennai Central railway station can feel a little more safe and comfortable as Southern Railway is opening an exclusive women facilitation centre, which will also have a separate enclosure for the benefit of lactating mothers.
This centre, which will come up beside the bookstall on the new concourse of Chennai Central, will be completely airconditioned and manned by women staff from the commercial department and the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
The commercial department is working against time to complete work on the station and ensure that it is opened on October 2. This is a first-of-its kind initiative at Chennai Central and Southern Railway.
Any woman passenger at any point of the day could approach this counter with a request which would be facilitated, an official in the commercial department said.
"For instance, RPF women personnel will accompany the women passengers if they want to take a pre-paid auto or taxi and ensure that they get one. The initiative is to increase the comfort level at the Central station, which is an area of strategic interest," the official said.
